Flautist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator Rowland Sutherland and his work in ensembles, bands, orchestras and as a soloist. Featuring classical, jazz, contemporary, non-Western and popular music.

Rowland has performed at such venues as the Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, North Sea Jazz Festival, Royal Albert Hall, Chatelet Les Halles and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall.

In Jazz
He has played with such renowned artists as Frank Wess, David Murray, Ali Ryerson, Flora Purim, Manu Dibango, Orphy Robinson, Courtney Pine and Jean Toussaint.

In Classical
Rowland regularly performs in various chamber groups a number of adventurous ensembles including Icebreaker, Uroboros, New Music Players, Ixion, Lontano and London Musici.

He has played with such orchestras as Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, London Philharmonic, European Community Chamber and Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

In Non-Western music
He has enjoyed playing with numerous stars including Olodum, Joyce, Airto, Gnawa Musicians of Morocco, Nana Vasconcelos and Gaspar Lawal.

In Pop
Rowland has added his sound to numerous celebrated artists and bands recordings such as Incognito, George Benson, Us3, Roland Gift, Marc Almond and MC Solaar.

Rowland leads several vibrant and colourful projects in the UK
The pulsating Mistura with tantalizing sounds from London and Brazil; Creative Force featuring the award winning vibest Orphy Robinson; In Kimbe with superb Sardinian vocalist Filomena Campus and the innovative group Myrtle with Alwynne Pritchard (vocals) and Thorolf Thuestad (computer).

As a soloist
Rowland enjoys performing solo flute music from various parts of the world including works by Jolivet, Takemitsu, Carter, Ferneyhough and Scelsi. As well as a host of British composers including Finnissy, Cutler, Toovey and Gander

As an educator
Rowland tutors at Trinity College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

ROWLAND performs with his colourful jazz band with Filomena Campus, In Kimbe. A challenging and colourful mixture of Sardinian, Brazilian rhythms and Mediterranean jazz live at Trinita’ D’Agultu, Sardinia, for the Orfeo Cinto di Mirto - Festival on 2.8.08 at 8pm.

Rowland performs on flute, piccolo, alto flute and bass flute with the adventurous ensemble The New Music Players in a Hear and Now Radio 3 broadcast of new works by Ed Hughes, Arlene Sierra, Alison Kay and Luke Stoneham.
